The Ophthalmic Common Clinical Competency Framework (OCCCF) has now been developed into an Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT), and is ready to be implemented in all units.

The OPT, based on the OCCCF, trains postgraduate orthoptists, optometrists and ophthalmic nurses in secondary care to develop their skills in cataract, glaucoma, medical retina or emergency eye care. This is an opportunity for departments to transform their workforce and improve capacity within their service.

We’re currently recruiting for Regional OPT Leads to oversee the OPT programme and quality of assessment of learners in their region. The Regional OPT Leads will be part of the RCOphth Regional Teams, if you’re interested in applying please contact your Regional Educational Adviser for more information. Find your Regional Educational Adviser on this list.

Unit OPT Leads, responsible for delivery of the OPT in their unit, and Educational Supervisors, responsible for supervising the educational and professional development of specific OPT learners, are being identified locally through Clinical Leads and College Tutors. Educational Supervisors can be from any of the four professions. View the job descriptions for the Unit OPT Leads and Educational Supervisors.

Clinical Leads can apply for funding to support set up costs from Deans and Transformation Leads, who are expecting requests – please e-mail [email protected] for further information.

The Learner’s Portfolio containing the enrolment form is now available by e-mailing [email protected]. Information about the programme is available on the HEE website.
