These new awards are offered jointly between the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Fight for Sight. Fight for Sight’s mission is to stop sight loss by funding the highest quality medical research. The RCOphth recognises that research is the basis of high-quality evidence-based clinical care, services, and policies. They are named to honour the late Miss Zakarian who generously left Fight for Sight a legacy to help the charity support pioneering researchers.

The National Clinical Excellence Awards have been renamed the National Clinical Impact Awards (NCIAs).  The 2022 round of the National Clinical Impact Awards will open for applications on Wednesday 27 April, with registration for a new online application system opening shortly before.  Please keep checking their website for details   NCIA 2022 Round

Online applications to the 2022 BMA medical book awards are open and will close on Friday 18 March 2022.  The BMA medical book awards take place annually to recognise outstanding contributions to medical literature. There are 15 BMA medical book awards categories available for 2022.

The highest honour that The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) can bestow is that of Honorary Fellow. It is awarded in recognition of a lifelong contribution to ophthalmology. Three new Honorary Fellows were commended at the recent RCOphth Annual Admission Ceremony, Professor Roger Buckley, Dr Santosh Honavar and Professor Sir Peng Khaw.

Members of the College are invited to submit nominations for Honorary Fellowships for 2022. The award of Honorary Fellow is the highest accolade that the College can bestow. It recognises those who have made a significant contribution to the field of ophthalmology.

The paper reports the findings of the British Childhood Vision Impairment and Blindness study (BCVISG) which relied on ophthalmologists and paediatricians across the UK’s four nations reporting newly diagnosed children with VI/SVIBL through the British Ophthalmological Study Unit (BOSU) and the equivalent national paediatric surveillance unit (BPSU).
