RCOphth and Ulverscroft Foundation announce winner of the 2023 Ulverscroft David Owen Prize

RCOphth would like to congratulate Dr Ian MacCormick, clinical lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, and his senior author Simon Harding from the University of Liverpool, for winning the Ulverscroft David Owen prize for the best-published paper titled: “How does blood-retinal barrier breakdown relate to death and disability in pediatric cerebral malaria?”

RCOphth / Fight for Sight Zakarian Awards Now Open

The 2023 Zakarian Awards are now open for submissions. Three awards will be offered to ophthalmologists who are members of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, to gain experience and undertake ophthalmic and vision research. The RCOphth Zakarian Awards are designed to support three categories of researchers.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Fight for Sight: The Zakarian Awards 2022 winner

Dr Abdus Samad Ansari, Academic Clinical Fellow at King’s College London, is investigating the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and healthy ageing within the eye. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of cells, creating energy to maintain life. Their disruption, through depletion or variation in function, is thought to be involved in the susceptibility of an individual to develop glaucoma. Utilising the TwinsUK Cohort, Dr Ansari will be one of the first to examine mitochondrial dysfunction in a healthy population over time.

Supporting Global Ophthalmology Education: The David and Molly Pyott Foundation Scholarships in Ophthalmology and The University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh invites applications for 12 postgraduate scholarships to support international applicants accepted for admission to their 2-year, part-time, online ChM (Master of Surgery) in Clinical Ophthalmology in September 2023, thanks to the generous support of The David and Molly Pyott Foundation Scholarships in Ophthalmology programme.

2023 National Clinical Impact Awards Round

The Advisory Committee on Clinical Impact Awards (ACCIA) has confirmed on their website that the 2023 awards round will commence as planned in March 2023, with a provisional opening date of Friday 3 March. The application window will be open for approximately 8 weeks, closing in late April or early May.
