The College has published its response to the finding of the recent National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) enquiry into juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) care. We fully support the report’s eight recommendations, and note a role for UK Ophthalmologists in supporting their delivery.
The College’s response was led by Ameenat Lola Solebo, Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The NCEPOD report, which you can see here, confirmed that timely diagnosis, prompt referral, and early access to medication can transform the outcomes and experience of a young person and their family, with clear evidence that young people with JIA must have their medical, psychological and social needs supported in an age-appropriate way with access to the right professionals in the right setting.
