There is estimated to be over one million people in the UK with a learning disability and people with learning disabilities may not know they have a sight problem and/or may not be able to tell people. We know adults with learning disabilities are 10 times more likely to be blind or partially sighted than the general population with 6 in 10 people with learning disabilities requiring glasses and often need support to get used to them. This ophthalmic service guidance provides advice on how to appropriately design services so that they are suitable for patients with learning disabilities and highlights some solutions to the difficulties that a service will need to overcome.
